perching & roosting

Pigeons perching or roosting (sleeping) on flat surfaces such as ledges or window sills are perhaps the most commonly encountered bird problem of all.

As pigeons return to the same spot to roost every night, this can lead to a large buildup of droppings on lower parts of the building and especially the ground below.

This is especially a problem for shop frontages where the droppings are off-putting for customers and potentially dangerous.

They can also cause problems on domestic houses, often roosting on sheltered window sills on the sides of houses and in the guttering.

Stainless steel pigeon spikes are often the best form of keeping pigeons off of these areas.

Bird spikes are used to prevent birds from landing on flat surfaces such as ledges, parapets, pipes, and window sills.

Using specially designed polycarbonate clips, spikes are also one of the best ways of keeping birds out of guttering.

All the spikes we use consist of 304 grade stainless steel pins attached to a UV-stabilised polycarbonate base. Depending on the substrate, the spikes are either attached with a high strength polymer adhesive or screwed in.

gulls

While not usually effective at preventing gulls from nesting, spikes can be very useful at deterring gulls from landing on roof ridges and parapets.

Gull spikes are longer and wider than standard pigeon spikes, so it is important that the correct spike is installed for the species in question.

Gulls also like to nest in the ‘v’-shaped area where the base of a chimney stack meets the pitched roof, known as the back gutter. Standard gull spikes are not suitable for use in these areas, as they can actually act as a platform for the gulls to build their nests on. For these areas, we usually use anti nesting-spikes, sometimes referred to as 'Scarborough Spikes' due to the fact they were developed for use by Scarborough council.

Scarborough spikes are made from 1 metre long stainless steel rods that are welded together. They are screwed into the base of the stack and then bent into a fan shape pointing up the roof. Though they are much bigger than normal gull spikes, multiple Scarborough spikes may still be required for large chimneys.

Other Facts

  • While we always use a high strength hybrid polymer adhesive to attach our spikes, it is important that the surfaces are fully prepared beforehand. This involves removing any bird droppings or other dirt and, in the case of porous surfaces, the application of a primer.
  • For birds perching on TV aerials or satellite dishes, we can install spikes made entirely of plastic that do not interfere with the signal. These are usually attached with nylon cable ties.
  • Spikes are also available in narrow and wide versions for use in a variety of locations.
  • An extra dense form of spike is also available for use against small birds like sparrows or starlings.
